Free. No sign-up.Rules last reviewed 2 Oct 2026

Paste Tally's trial balance as CSV or tab-separated text with a Group column, or open a CSV, TXT or Tally XML file. Up to 100 ledgers.

Decides where purchase ledgers go: stock-in-trade for a trader, materials consumed for a manufacturer.

Charter turns the trial balance into a full set of financial statements.

Confirm the ledger mapping, add notes to accounts and ratios, and export to Excel with formulas, with last year's figures alongside. You review and sign.

How this is worked out

  • The text is parsed in your browser as Tally exports it: ledger, group, opening and closing balance, with Dr and Cr read from the suffix or from separate columns.
  • Each ledger is placed on a Schedule III line by rule, from its Tally group and name. This is Charter's reading of Tally's default groups. A ledger no rule covers is listed by name and left out of the figures.
  • Lines are added up in Schedule III order. Closing stock is taken to the change in inventories, and the year's profit is carried into reserves and surplus, so the balance sheet can balance.
  • Five checks run on the result: the trial balance ties, every ledger is mapped, assets equal equity and liabilities, profit equals income less expenses, and closing cash agrees. A failed check says what to look at.
  • The comparatives column, when shown, is the opening balances in the file, which are last year's closing figures. No model is used anywhere, and every number comes from the trial balance you pasted.

Questions CAs ask

What does the trial balance need to look like?
Tally's trial balance export as CSV or tab-separated text, with a Ledger column, a Group column and a closing balance (or separate debit and credit columns). Opening balances are optional and, when present, fill the comparatives column. A Tally XML export also works.
Is my trial balance sent anywhere?
No. The text is read and worked out in your browser. It is not uploaded, stored or logged, and no AI is involved. Close the tab and it is gone.
How does it decide where a ledger goes?
By the Tally group the ledger sits under and a few name rules, read against Schedule III of the Companies Act 2013 (Division I). It is Charter's reading of Tally's default groups, so a ledger under a custom group may land on a different line than you would choose. Review every line.
Why does the nature of business matter?
Purchases go to different lines. A trader's purchases become purchases of stock-in-trade, and a manufacturer's become cost of materials consumed. Pick the one that fits the client.
Why does my balance sheet not balance?
Usually a ledger was left out because no rule placed it, or the trial balance itself does not tie. The tie checks show which, and the unmapped ledgers are listed by name. In the app you place each one on a line yourself.
What is the limit on the free page?
100 ledgers. Above that the page tells you the count and stops. The app has no limit.
Is this a finished set of financial statements?
No. It is a draft to read on screen. Notes to accounts, ratios, the cash flow statement, comparatives from last year's statements and the Excel export are in the app, where you confirm the mapping before anything is exported.
